This is the third post in the Super Fit series and it is about how you can get yourself motivated to exercise.
It is true for most of us : We have the exercise equipment,we know which exercises we should do and why it is so important to exercise regularly.We even fix a time for exercising.But when it comes to actually doing it,we somehow end up doing something else , like sleeping for an extra hour (that's what used to happen to me :-) ).
Apart from office exercises , its was only once or twice a week that I would carry out my exercise schedule.And I really wanted that to change.I had heard that a body performing at its peak feels different and I wanted to experience that.And be able to sustain the experience .............if I liked it : - ) I looked it up on the net , read books and experimented with the various methods to get myself motivated to exercise.
Below are the ones that worked :
- Decide when you will be exercising and for how long.If you do it at the same time everyday it will become a ritual you automatically perform without even thinking about it........like brushing your teeth
- Now ,I believe this to be the most important factor in becoming regular at exercise:Don't get demoralized if you miss your exercise session a couple of times.......or even most of the time...............you have most of humanity to keep you company :-) .........So even if you haven't exercised for a whole month,do it today. Stick to it and remember ......... giving up is not an option
- Have the equipment : Decide where you are going to exercise and stick to the place. I you can afford it,buy clothes specially designed for exercise.If you do yoga,buy a yoga mat.Having the proper equipment
- Get an Exercise buddy : Ever since I got my husband to exercise with me , the whole thing has become so much more fun .Also both of us have become more regular at exercise .If I am feeling lazy,my husband doesn't give up till I am up and exercising.
- Start Small : This is another very important tip.Don't make it very tough right in the beginning.Look at all the ads,they let us get addicted to the new brand of butter before hiking the price......follow their example.Let your body get used to exercising at a particular time .Then increase the duration and toughness of the routine slowly.Remember..........slowly.
- Incorporate variety into your exercise routine : Doing the same thing day after day will bore you.Some days.....after you are done warming up.....just dance to your favourite tune.Have different Aerobics CD if you can afford them....otherwise YouTube has many dance videos as well.On other days go for a run.Keep it interesting.
